A peaceful encounter with a tabby cat in a churchyard. He did not see me at first. Both of us enjoying the afternoon birdsong and solitude. I watched him nodding off by a gravestone, those sleepy feline eyes slowly shutting, not a care in the world........
Until he heard my feet shuffle in the gravel on the churchyard path. A set of enchanting green eyes fixed upon me. Who was going to release the stare first? {not the cat!}
I wonder if he comes here all the time, perhaps he is the resident church cat? I even found him portrayed in stone as a gargoyle by the church tower, warding off evil spirits.
He soon went back to the business of being care free and snoozy. Must have recognized a kindred churchyard friend who was there to appreciate the serenity. Here at St Peter's near Delamere Forest in Cheshire, the afternoon sun started to just touch the edges of the pink camellia whose petals are beginning to fall. Time to head back.......
I hope we chance upon each other again and maybe make friends, the cat and I. Maybe share a bench and talk of church mice and the clattering of jackdaws in the tower. I'd like that very much, dear little tabby.

The church cat looks like quite a character. Probably has some interesting tales of the churchyard too.

What a beautiful post. I love churchyards, they're so peaceful.
When I visited one in Paris there were loads of cats living there, people had made up beds for them inside the broken crypts.
I adore churchyards too. We have one in the village, but no church near it as it was bombed! I love the bushes with the flowers.
