Roller skating fun

When I was a child I had an amazing pair of roller skates. They had a red swoosh and a silver star, with red wheels and stopper and were purchased from the long gone nostalgic toy shop Zodiac Toys. Being a child of the 80's I was very fond of my roller skates, hurtling around the local streets and free wheelin' around the park with my friends. We were even fortunate enough to have a roller rink in the next town for many a birthday party and weekend get together.

As an adult I don't get to skate much although I did go to an 80's roller party at a leisure centre a few years ago and it was so much fun complete with neon leg warmers and ra-ra skirts. However, there are plenty of roller skating events around the country and it is great exercise opportunity to burn the calories away and have a great laugh at the same time.

Retro roller discos:
Glam up and roller dance away the night under a glittering disco ball. Perfect for a hen do maybe or a get together. Many roller rinks offer adult only club nights as well as the usual family sessions.

Street Skating:
I first heard about this from a friend living in Paris who told me about the Pari Roller, a Friday night street skating event around the beautiful city. This concept came to our Capital and  London Skate is
a popular event with special Santa skates and spooky Halloween skates. The skating season starts in April 2015 and every Friday there is a different route of around 10 miles. Expect between 200-500 other skaters and an unforgettable time.

Roller derby:
A sport that is gaining popularity all the time is roller derby - a tough contact game that is mostly played by the ladies. My town has a roller derby team and the players are really sassy with fun names such as Thunder Razor and Deb D'Bully; great entertainment but these ladies are tough and the fashion is just as important as the athleticism. If you want to get seriously fit then try roller derby.

Skate Fit:
Learn to skate, gain new skills and get fit. There are many skate fit classes across the UK and you will really see the benefits - toning legs and improving cardio vascular fitness. This is really my type of exercise as your typical gym does not excite me but skating is such an happy activity. You will be sure to have a giggle and make new friends at one of these organised events.

Do you have roller skates still or are they just a part of your childhood? Would you join a skating activity?
