Trying to perk myself up today by thinking of all the things I like about this time of year and I'm struggling. I'm getting the end of season boredom, particularly as we have had no snow and all this miserable rain instead.
Looking back over the last few years in my photo album, January has been so varied from the -10°C when Little bird was born in 2010 to the relative mildness of 8°C today. From lovely day trips to sledging on the snowy common. Plenty of games played with Little Bird inside the warmth of the house with the dogs snuggled on the sofa and tea parties with hot chocolate and candles.
I'm already looking forward very much to the springtime and have sort of given up on winter if it's not going to offer a large helping of snow or some spectacular frosty mornings. Today is looking cloudy and drizzly again and checking the weather report it seems like this is the case for the whole weekend. Mildest winter for 25 years apparently according to this BBC report.
I am such a typical Brit loving to talk about the weather and have a fascination for it which started in my childhood, learning about clouds and anticyclones. When I was at school, I wanted to be a meteorologist, studied geography and that eventually led me into environmental science. Sadly, I didn't get to work in this area and ended up (how many of us do) in IT. Still, I love reading about the weather and comparing temperatures from different years - hope I'm not alone in this :) Perhaps it is with becoming a gardener that I like knowing if the temperatures are high enough for the grass to start growing or low enough to protect certain plants for the evening.
Have a lovely weekend everyone and take a brolly x

i know! The ionly thing that has me not wishing for snow is the fact i am racing the 'catch the yeti' race in feb! Snow and rivers sounds too cold!!! x
I just left an essay, all about our experiences of weather this January and last, and about Imbolc coming, but I wasn't signed in. When I signed in, the comment was no longer there. Gutted xxx
I'm really looking forward to Spring myself! It makes me feel more cheerful!
As much as the winters from the past few years were slightly OTT!! I think I prefer then to all this rain.
Yes I too am a weather addict, it does seem to be a British thing lol! Our Guinea Pig is seriously "over" Winter, desperate to have the chance to play outside again!
Haha. I'm so not a weather person. I'm a 'walk out the house and have to go back in and completely change to suit the weather' person ;)
It sounds really stormy with you again.... I don't think winter has quite made it anywhere yet, although It think that might be about to change. We are expecting around 12 cm of snow tonight!
Ah I lvoe this look back on the colourfull bits - reminds me it's not been all grey and rain! x
I prefer the weather like this to when it snows. I know the snow looks pretty but I'm terrified of driving on icy roads and I have no choice where we live!
I don't particularly like cold so I am waiting patiently for the summer.I love your clicks especially the ambience that's created by the candle pic and the snow drops.
I was so hopng for snow this winter. I think I jinxed it by buying snowsuits cheaply in the summer. I to did environmental science and loved it but my career direction was Geology.......sadly I didn't get to pursue it either
I feel the same. I had plans for a lovely river walk this morning but its pouring and it just makes me misreable! We did get to go out yesterday (before the huge storm hit) but i hate the feeling of being cold x
We are never quite satisfied with the weather, are we! I do prefer it mild though.
I totally agree with you. I don't really mind the temperatures in winter time so much as the dark evenings - they are horrid! It's great to see some snowdrops in your pics - they are my fave flowers! So glad spring has sprung :-) Lovely blog - following you :-)
I feel a bit cheated that we haven't the hard Winter we were promised.I want a few days of snow.
I totally agree about giving up on winter because it's been so totally un-winter-like! I love the snow and frost but now I want spring. I want to see what delights my new garden is going give me. It's so exciting not knowing what's going to grow this year in this new garden!
I feel hard done by that we have kinda mist winter - I want snow *stamps feet*
Im not a fan of winter I bed my kids will be when they get more into the snow side of it .x
