Every time I look at home magazines I am drawn to open plan
living. I once had an acquaintance who had extended the whole rear of their
1930’s semi-detached house and it was pure open plan loveliness.
One corner was a beautiful Shaker style kitchen with a
central island and breakfast bar. Perfect for socialising and cooking whilst
the children played in the other part of the room in a snug/lounging
area. This area had a corner sofa, widescreen television and a big
fluffy rug. It was very cosy whilst still retaining the open plan effect.
The rest of the room had a long vintage wooden table and benches either side providing an amazing family dinner table, an absolute dream for me. The room
opened out with full length folding doors onto a sandstone patio and landscaped garden making the transition from house to garden on a sunny day feel seamless. In order to let in the natural light there were roof windows by
VELUX which made the room feel so bright and airy.
I would love to do the same with our Victorian semi, there is a side return to extend into and then a full extension across the back would really open the house out and inject some light into it. At the moment the galley kitchen and dining area are quite dark and the space doesn’t work well for us anymore as a family.
I am moving on from my shabby chic love a little and would
probably have a more modern style especially with the kitchen area. I would
like sleek and glossy units rather than my current country style. We
desperately need more space with my decision to home educate Little Bird so my
open plan extension would give us a fantastic space to be creative and for the
family to be together for eating, playing, working and socialising. Something
to consider for the future as to whether we move or improve.
Have you chosen to extend rather than move? I would love to
hear of any stories.
