The Big Lunch

Did you hear about The Big Lunch? It was a nationwide event to get neighbours together, whether a full on street gathering , tea and cake in the back garden or picnic and games in the local park. Basically, the aim was to to promote community spirit and build friendships. This was the 3rd year that the Eden Project have run the event and the Community Garden, Grozone, that I volunteer at held a BBQ to join in with the fun. It was a chance for local residents to come along and have a look at how the once disused land is now being reutilised into green space accessible to the whole community.

It was an excuse for me to bake.

It was also Daddy and Little Bird's first time there to see what I've been up to.
This is the wonderful vegetable garden that I help with.

Typically, the rain starting lashing down but this did not dampen spirits and we all carried on eating and chatting. Little Bird made his debut, tearing around raised beds, splashing in puddles and attracting the attention of the local children who delighted in accompanying him around.

I got to know my fellow volunteers a bit better as I'm the newbie and they've been helping the project for a long time. Since I left the workplace I have been solely wearing my mummy hat so volunteering is good for a homebird that needs to fly out on her own from time to time.

Sounds like a great way to meet your neighbours and those cakes look delicious.
